Our ESG Progress

We are committed to creating a regenerative impact that leaves our communities, environment and industry in a better state. Our Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework is central to this commitment, guiding us as we set and reach specific goals within each area.

Update from our Chief Sustainability Officer

In 2023, we’ve adapted our ESG approach to reflect deeper business goals and evolving industry realities. This year, we have made strides in employee inclusion, expanded our responsible procurement efforts and honed our environmental initiatives, with more tailored goals for long-term sustainability. We're ensuring that every team member feels empowered to drive these changes forward, embedding a culture of kaitiaki – guardianship – throughout our organisation.

Environment: Protecting Our Planet

We’re dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint and promoting sustainable operations across all our hotels. Some of our key progress points include:

Emissions Management

We transitioned to the Toitū carbonreduce program, with a focus on internal reduction rather than offsetting. While we missed our emissions intensity target, we are implementing stronger systems to prevent refrigerant leaks.

Solar Energy

Solar panels installed at Sudima Auckland Airport generated over 115 MWh in 2023, reducing emissions by 11.5 tCO2e. We’re developing an Energy Transition Plan for future solar expansion.

Water Conservation

Sudima Auckland Airport now has a rainwater harvesting system, and other locations are exploring similar installations where feasible.

Social: Supporting People and Communities

We’re fostering a culture of inclusion, development and community outreach, with recent milestones in:

Unconscious Bias Training

Now part of our onboarding, this training ensures all employees engage with inclusive recruitment and unconscious bias education.

Cultural Awareness

Our Te Ao Māori and Te Reo Māori training programs are expanding, promoting Māori values across our organisation.

Internship Program for Māori and Pacifica

Launched in late 2024, this program provides hospitality industry opportunities and scholarships to Māori and Pacific youth, with placements starting in 2025.

Governance: Driving Ethical Business Practices

We’re committed to responsible governance that holds us accountable to high ethical standards. Key initiatives include:

Transparent Reporting

ESG reports are shared in our monthly management reviews to ensure our leaders have a clear, real-time view of our sustainability impact.

External Accreditations

Sudima Hotels has retained accessibility accreditations and continually enhances its practices through partnerships with industry experts and those with lived experiences.

Responsible Procurement

A Responsible Procurement Policy is in place, with 80% of suppliers signing on to eliminate unnecessary plastics and promote sustainable materials in our supply chain.
