Energy savings at Sudima Auckland Airport

Published: 3 August 2018

Sudima Auckland Airport, was especially designed to reduce environmental impact.

In a year the savings at Sudima Auckland Airport are equivalent to (1):

  • Eight times the average household emissions per year

  • Driving from Auckland to Wellington in an average size car 447 times

  • 70 times the average electricity use of one home per year

  • 19 times the average emissions of one vehicle per year

To achieve these savings, a lot was taken into account when the hotel was built. Sudima Auckland Airport was built 2011 in a North-South orientation to harness maximum energy from the sun. The hotel was outfitted with green technologies which include:

  • A 25,000-litre tank for rain harvesting

  • Refrigerator free in the majority of guest rooms

  • 100% energy saving LED light bulbs in the property

  • Chilled Beam air-conditioning, which is unique to Sudima in the South Pacific (the system uses hot and cold water to maximise energy efficiency and double the fresh air of any comparable system)

  • Rainwater harvesting (the rainwater is filtered and recycled for non-potable use)

Sudima Auckland Airport also has two electrical vehicle charging bays for hotel guests.

To achieve this carbon neutral status, all goods and products from more than 20 suppliers over a six-month period were measured, including assessing natural gas and electricity usage, the quantities and disposal of waste and tracking air and car travel by hotel staff.

The use of non-hazardous chemicals to clean the hotel reduces our impact on the environment. Our latest initiative which has had a great impact was to use paper straws in place of plastic straws across the group. These decisions have affected our overall commitment to the environment.

Sudima Auckland Airport holds a Qualmark Enviro Silver rating.
