Straka’s art is all about the stories that linger in fleeting encounters, the layers of meaning hidden in plain sight,

Heather Straka’s artistic journey began at Auckland’s Elam School of Fine Arts, where she graduated with a degree in sculpture. A visit to a René Magritte exhibition in Belgium sparked her passion for painting, leading to a career defined by bold explorations of identity, culture and perception. Her works, from the provocative Paradise Lost series to the cinematic Isolation Hotel, invite viewers to question what lies beneath the surface.

“Straka’s art is all about the stories that linger in fleeting encounters, the layers of meaning hidden in plain sight,” says Andrew Wood, who has written extensively on her work.

In Age of Discovery, Straka reimagines the themes of her Isolation Hotel series, filling Sudima Auckland City with striking baroque-inspired photographic tableaux. Guests can wander through the hotel, discovering a world of enigmatic characters and settings that spark curiosity and untold stories.

The artistic surprises don’t end there. As you stroll through the hotel, you will discover hidden art delights that enrich the space with creativity and intrigue. It’s the perfect complement to the modern comfort Sudima Auckland City offers.

For Straka, a hotel is the ultimate transient space – a place of fleeting connections and shared stories. “I’ve always been fascinated by the encounters one has in these communal spaces, where strangers come together for just a moment,” she says.

Whether you’re a guest or a local visitor, Age of Discovery offers a memorable experience, blending a bright, airy atmosphere with the intrigue of artistic exploration.
