The Ngāti Whakaue Education Endowment Trust Board in conjunction with Sudima Lake Rotorua are proud to offer the Ngāti Whakaue Sudima Hotels Scholarship Programme. This initiative supports Ngāti Whakaue descendants in pursuing careers in hospitality, offering diplomas in Hotel and Hospitality Management. The scholarship includes paid course fees and a one-year internship at Sudima Hotels, providing hands-on experience across various departments.

Empowering Young Māori Talent Since 2014
The Ngāti Whakaue Scholarship has been a beacon of opportunity for passionate young Māori students, opening doors in the hospitality industry since 2014. Initially launched to encourage local talent into leadership roles within the hotel industry in Rotorua and the Bay of Plenty, this scholarship is now in its 7th successful year.
Expanded Opportunities: Now Including Aspiring Chefs
This year, we're thrilled to expand the Ngāti Whakaue Scholarship to not only support future hotel managers but also those aspiring to become chefs. Our goal is to assist Ngāti Whakaue descendants in securing employment, training, and junior leadership positions with Sudima Hotels, while obtaining qualifications in various hospitality areas, such as:
- Diploma in Hotel Management
- Diploma in Hospitality Management
- Graduate Diploma in Hotel Management

Our first scholarship recipient, Awatere Douglas, exemplifies the program's potential. Now the Hotel Manager at Sudima Lake Rotorua and Group Cultural Ambassador, Awatere plays a pivotal role in our leadership team, providing Māori language support and organizing cultural events like Matariki and Māori Language Week. His journey has even taken him across major cities in North America, showcasing Sudima Hotels on an international stage.
