THE LOCALS

There are few places on earth like Kaikōura, this small coastal village has breath taking alpine and coastal views that will stop you in your tracks. It is also home to some unique and rare wildlife including whales, dolphins, seals, land and sea birds.

Please respect and help us to look after our wonderful wildlife, obey any signage or barriers and keep your distance. If you find any wildlife that is severely injured, entangled in marine debris or being harassed by people or dogs, please call the Department of Conservation Hotline on Freephone 0800 362 468.

HUTTON'S SHEARWATER / KAIKŌURA TĪTĪ

This vulnerable bird species spends most of its life at sea but returns to their two remaining nesting sites in the mountains of Kaikōura to breed during the months of March to May. During this time the fledgling birds leave their nests to fly to sea, guided by the moon and stars. However, bright artificial lights can disorient them, leading to them become lost and unable to find their way. This can have disastrous consequences, they may fly into objects and suffer injuries or become exhausted and unable to fly leaving them vulnerable to predators or even dying from exhaustion. At Sudima Kaikōura we reduce lighting during the months of March to May, especially at night, and ask our guests to do the same. By simply turning off unnecessary lights and closing drapes at night we can make a big difference to the survival of these rare and beautiful birds.

NEW ZEALAND FUR SEAL / KEKENO

Once hunted to the brink of extinction these playful critters population is now at healthy levels and growing. They are common site along the Kaikōura coast, especially the colonies at Ohau Point and Kaikōura Peninsula. While they look cute and playful, you must treat them with respect and caution - seals have large teeth, can easily become aggressive and are capable of inflicting serious injury. Seals also harbour infectious diseases that can be transmitted to humans. Observe seals quietly, go no nearer than 20 metres, do not touch or feed under any circumstances, and do not get between seals and their access to water.
