FEATURED ARTIST – AROHA GOSSAGE

Our rooms feature limited edition prints from emerging New Zealand artist Aroha Gossage. Aroha’s paintings seek to connect with tupuna (ancestors) and the past, to a childhood spent learning how to live with and from the land – collecting and propagating native seeds, diving for kina and paua, and fishing in the river.

Haumaringi – Mist

“This painting has memories of the early mornings, when we would go down to check the net and walk across the mud flats to get to the river. These places of our land still remain the same and time has stood still.”

Pakiri Beach – Early Morning

“My family home – a treasure passed down on the basis of whakapapa (the core of Maori knowledge). Inherent in the concept of Ahikaroa (occupation) is not just authority over the land, but also the responsibility and obligations of guardianship – for the past, present and future generations of people who have relationships with this land.”

Wairua Tapu – Holy Spirit

“Before I begin a painting, I always say a short prayer taught to me by my mother that comes from Te Haahi Ratana; Father, Son, Holy Spirit, Faithful Angels and the divine mouthpiece Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana.”
